This group of islands is located 78 nautical miles to the north of the Port of Progreso and its surface covers 50 hectares, composed of five isles of white coral with steep cleefs. The largest is to the north, "Isla Desterrada".
"Isla Pajaros" that follows, is a nesting ground for the bobo, frigate, sea swallows, white or brown sea turtle and various fish species.
"Isla Blanca", "Isla del Muerto" (500 x 250 meters) and "Isla Perez", that is populated by the personnel of the IX Naval Zone of the Armada of Mexico and the Marine Signal Corps of the Secretariat of Communications and Transport, as well as fishing camps.

A coral barrier reef is found 28 kilometers from the archipielago, that is a zone of shipwrecks, and is 40 (Spanish) fathoms deep, formed by a hard and soft coral polyps. There is no fresh water on the reef. The lighthouse, wich is 22 meters tall, utilizes 2 white reflectors beaming from 15 to 48 miles at 4 flashes and is auxiliary to maritime signals. It is installed on "Isla Perez", which measures 900 by 300 meters and enjoys radiotelegraph service.


The climate is warm-dry with a mean annual temperature of 26.7 degrees (Celsius) summer rains and vegetation characteristic of dunes, such as weeds, grasses and cacti. Considering its biological richness, the zone qualifies to be denominated as a "Protected Area"
