Bocas de Dzilam is 98 kilometers from Merida, and tucked between the villages of Dzilam Bravo and San Felipe. It is located in one of the most lush zones of the Yucatan.with exuberant plant growth, a warm-dry climate.
The sights at Bocas de Dzilam incorporate swamps, bogs, low, dry scrub forest, coastal dunes and marshes. Surrounding mangroves supporting a large quantity of local and migratory wildlife such as the turtle, both the white and mottled pelican, the frigate bird, the fisher eagle, the wild turkey, the flamingo, the spider monkey, the yaguarundy, the swamp crocodile. Because it is an area of low ecological contamination it was decreed a "Protected Area" by the State Goverment on January 26, 1989.
Its surface totals 62,000 hectares, of which 19,000 correspond to bodies of water which largely contribute to subterranean flow (springs and sink holes) that provides nutrients to many marine life species.
