Large land settlements, called haciendas, have been a major part of the development of the Yucatan region. Haciendas were once the key farming communities that produced natural henequin (which was processed and used for yarn, rope, and string). Since the end of the henequin trade, haciendas and their colonial buildings have become important tourist sites. Today, many haciendas have been converted to museums, restaurants, hotels, and cultural centres.
